There are seven pine species native to Florida:
Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda)
Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris)
Pond Pine (Pinus serotina)
Sand pine (Pinus clausa)
Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii)
Spruce pine (Pinus glabra)
Shortleaf or Yellow Pine (Pinus echinata)
Below are photos of four of the seven, taken during early spring at Jacksonville Arboretum. All trees were mature and of similar girth.

The bark had wide, silver channels coursing through it.
Bark scales were poorly defined.

The scales on the trunk are large and well defined, but irregularly arranged.

The scales are smaller and more defined.
They run in loosely defined vertical columns.

The bark looks shaggy, as though someone has
been flicking the scales away with a knife.
